Much has been made of the ability of the Internet to give any dedicated person the ability to work from home online. However, the accessibility of a career from home does not necessarily mean that all the people who want to make money from home will be successful. As a matter of fact, the home based Internet business requires more of an upfront investment than does holding down a normal job.
However, the rewards can be immensely satisfying and are definitely worth it for those who can withstand the initial "training" period.
The work from home businesses that are truly legitimate do not require a definite skill set in the same vein as say a doctor or a lawyer, but they require just as much research into the environment and just as much prep time as any profession. To be good at what most work from home Internet jobs entail, which is some form of Internet marketing, requires that you know the landscape, the players, the gatekeepers, and where you are on the scorecard at any given point in time.
The Landscape
To succeed in with any working from home ideas or to create a successful online business, you must present yourself professionally to differentiate yourself from all of the other fly by night operations that pop up online. This will require that you invest either time or money into building a web site or having someone else build it for you. If it is a business that does not require a web site, what will most likely be required is either a reputation for professional service or an ability to network (affiliate marketing). Both of these skills can be taught, but there is definitely a measure of natural talent that will take you far.
The Players
Your competition has much more access to you online, and you are competing in a much wider playing field. Therefore your niche must be even more focused and your audience must come absolutely first at all times. Also, you must know who you appeal to, which is easier done than ever before with the analytics that search engines freely give to the public. And speaking of the search engines...
The Gatekeepers
The search engines, and to a lesser extent, the larger social networks, are the gatekeepers of what is popular and what can make money on the Internet. Proper use of these resources will make your job much easier. Neglect or misuse these resources to try to make a quick buck, and your reputation can be tarnished for good (or at least until you change your URL).
Knowing the Score
Perhaps the most important thing about a work from home opportunity is to keep track of how you are perceived by your client base. The new word of mouth is the social network, the "like," the "+1" etc. Make sure that you know the score at all times if you are planning on working from home online.
